Should
we have wood fires in Village homes?
Heating
the Heij Home – How did life get so

Village Newsletter after a discussion at the 2002 AGM
that was designed to air polarised views on the
suitability of wood-fired heating and cooking for the
village.
At the
meeting it became clear that the large majority of
community members at that time were against wood fires
for health and comfort reasons – thus impacting
on the plans of those, including ourselves, who were,
at the time, considering this heating / cooking option
for environmental reasons.
The article also concludes with a recent update,
written 7 years later in 2009, looking back over how
the outcome of the original heating dilemma was very
satisfactorily resolved for our own particular
lifestyle.
“One of
the most daunting things about trying to establish a
more sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyle
is the sheer complexity of all the issues that need to
be resolved. Everything, it seems, is connected to
everything else – across all the old boundaries
that used to separate different parts of our lives.
Even “apples” and “oranges”
cannot be dealt with separately any more. The debate
over how to use energy and how to heat our homes is a
case in point.”
