LEAFY SEA DRAGON FESTIVAL 2011 - APRIL 15 – 24

An invitation to exhibit during the 2011 Leafy Sea Dragon Festival held in the Yankalilla District of the Fleurieu Peninsula. This successful festival encompasses community, artistic creativity, natural environment and heritage. Open entry exhibitions for 2 and 3 dimensional works of all media other than photography will be held in the Jubilee Hall, Main South Road Yankalilla.

Congratulation to our YaccaDoodle arts group for a successful SALA exhibition event over the last three weekends. Now it’s full steam ahead for the November Art Market!

Here’s how the SALA event featured in last week’s Southern Times Messenger:

Just a reminder that Mosaics are on every second Tuesday afternoon at Sue E's shed, 24 Dianella Way. (It's surprisingly warm, but if it's a really cold day we put the heater on).

Beginners or people with one-off projects are welcome. You don't have to commit to every fortnight, or be mosaic addicts like Vi and me. Afternoon tea is provided by a generous neighbour. Check the Village calendar if you lose track of which Tuesday it's on.

The next session is next Tuesday 24 August at 1pm.

Do make sure you visit this excellent contribution to the Arts & Cultural life of the Village.

We are really pleased to have Anthony Steel opening the exhibition for us, and I'm sure he will make it a great opening. And, again, refreshments to add to the YaccaDoodles supply would be great.  Tea & coffee will be supplied; 

I am exhibiting some works which will be very reduced, (they will be indicated with a 1/2 sticker) and some new work,  which will be available at the full price.

The YaccaDoodle Art Group is holding an exhibition during the Sala Festival.  
Exhibited will be pastel paintings, pottery, painted terracotta drums, sculptures, ceramics, figurines, mosaic garden decorations & metal garden sculptures.

To be opened by Anthony Steel AM, artistic Director of five Adelaide Festivals, and recipient of the Premier's Life Time Achievement Award. He recently published his highly acclaimed memoirs, 'Painful in Daily Doses'.  

We would love as many villagers as possible to come & celebrate the opening with us.  Tea, coffee and refreshments, a cozy fire, music played by our talented guitarist and singer, Chris Hansen. What more could anyone want?  And of course, bring your friends to make it a happy occasion.

We are supporting Motivation Australia (run by our very own Kylie & Ray Mines), who provide wheelchair services in developing countries of the Asia Pacific.  There will be prints and other items sold and a raffle to raise money for this cause.

From the Adelaide Advertiser Friday 2 July - See ATTACHED

Since winning the ‘Advertiser & Business SA Contemporary Art Prize’ last year, Village artist Heidi Karo has begun examining her Estonian heritage through her art. She is working on an exhibition at the Prospect Gallery and her SALA offering in 2010 will be on show at O’Malley Studio Gallery in Aldinga.

Great things were achieved this long weekend. Have a look at the photos or take a walk and try out the balance station and have a look at the serpent wall.

The wall is still in progress so please no climbing on until it is completed in the next couple of weeks.

From the Indaily News - Creative cover story

The first general manager of the Adelaide Festival Centre, Anthony Steel, will feature on the cover of the 2009/10 Adelaide White Pages directory. Mr Steel, who was the artistic director for five Adelaide Festivals during the 70s and 80s and has a long history of involvement with SA arts orgnisations, was chosen under this years theme Creative Australians: Inspiring Our Communities.

Congratulations Anthony - it’s a significant recognition, well deserved!

The playground design meeting last Saturday produced some great ideas towards developing a whole of village playspace design to be presented to villagers soon.

During the meeting Justin led a workshop with the kids and parents, and together they built a temporary humpy (see photos ATTACHED) as an example of a natural playspace. The humpy will be reviewed in 3 months to decide if it is to be maintained or removed.

Stick Humpy

Muir Commons was the first purpose built Cohousing in the USA. It was also McCamant & Durrett's first Cohousing project. It was designed through a process starting with ads in the media in 2001, and built in 2002. Their big solar array went up in 2003. Statistics are a very dry way to present information. Art, on the other hand, is one of the most powerful tools we have for linking a message with emotional impact. Have a look at this link sent in by Sue Wiseman. Art is cleverly used to portray statistics as a very scary message!

Last Sunday, Julie, Anne, Elizabeth, Sandra and Vi gathered at Sue Gebhardt's house for a Creative Writing Workshop as part of the Arts and Cultural Committee's workshop program.

We had an enjoyable time doing 10 minute writing exercises and sharing what we'd written. (See pictures ATTACHED.) The group wants to continue and will meet again in July.
