Who would like to be a YaccaDoodle?

The Yaccadoodle Art Group are intending to enter SALA (South Australian Living Artists) event in August.

We are having a meeting next Monday 15 March, 7.30p.m. at 12 Yacca Way, to plan our entry.

If other artists would like to join us for SALA, they would be very welcome.  However, once we have put in our entry, it would be TOO LATE to join us, as everyone would need to be in the planning stages.

All interested, please either come to the meeting, or if unable to, please contact me by phone on 8557 8180 or email

YaccaDoodle Exhibition

Our exhibition at 12 Yacca Way will not only be open from Thursday 4 March to Sunday 7 March, but Monday 8 March as well.  This is because Monday 8th is a public holiday.

Thank you for all the support we have already received, and particularly those who attended our Official Opening on Saturday, and cheered us on.

And the Village Arts Group ‘YaccaDoodle’ will also be exhibiting at 12 Yacca Way on the same days from 9am to 4:30pm.

'ella-mental' exhibition begins this weekend

To the Yacca way neighbourhood group, the landscaping team and others who have cleaned the street made flags and wind sculptures, this gesture of community togetherness has been very inspirational for us artists and we thank you very much.

The Village has attracted outside interest for our arts programme, and ‘ella-mental’ made great effort to make it a memorable arts and social occasion.

All are welcome to our opening and hope to see you there.

YaccaDoodle on display during Fringe

Hi fellow Villagers,

We now have flyers ready to distribute.  Anyone who would like a master copy of the flyer that they would like to use to print / photocopy etc. to distribute to friends or anyone you think could be interested, please contact me by email or phone (8557 8180).

Our first open day is Saturday 20 February, followed by an Official Opening on Saturday 27 February.  We are really pleased that the Mayor is coming to open it, and John Hill has also said he'll attend.

The dates of the exhibition are:  20, 21, & 27, 28 February; and 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 11, 12, 13, 14 March; 9.00-4.30. It is at 12 Yacca Way.

We would love to see our fellow villagers at the opening, and on the first day would be great, to give us all encouragement in our new endeavour.

We also want to thank all the wonderful people of Yacca Way and its surrounds who have given up their precious time to help make decorated bicycle wheels and tidy up the street; particularly Richard & Gillian Clampett, who have not only encouraged, but found hanging stands, worked on the beautiful flags, and many other jobs.  This is a such a supportive atmosphere to live in!

Remember bird baths for the NG areas

Just a reminder to Neighbourhood Groups from the Arts and Culture Committee about making (or supplying) bird baths in all the various NG areas:

It’s an opportunity for creativity, and it will be so much appreciated by our birdlife now that other water sources are drying up.

Bird baths for the Village

The Arts and Cultural Committee would like to see each Neighbourhood Group with a bird bath made by artists and members of Neighbourhood Groups.

This would not only benefit our precious bird life over the Summer, but be a great way to build community in the creation process.

Violet Carpenter has kindly offered to co-ordinate this and would like to come to each NG when they next meet to talk about the idea. It would be helpful if Neighbourhood Group leaders could contact Vi to let her know when their next meeting is to be held.

Playground Design Group report

The playground design meeting last Saturday produced some great ideas towards developing a whole of village playspace design to be presented to villagers soon.

During the meeting Justin led a workshop with the kids and parents, and together they built a temporary humpy (see photos ATTACHED) as an example of a natural playspace. The humpy will be reviewed in 3 months to decide if it is to be maintained or removed.

If you would like to know more about the playground progress, please contact me.

Interesting co-housing website

Muir Commons was the first purpose built Cohousing in the USA. It was also McCamant & Durrett's first Cohousing project. It was designed through a process starting with ads in the media in 2001, and built in 2002. Their big solar array went up in 2003. There are 26 units of clustered, attached housing facing across a central path. There are good details & photos at: http://www.muircommons.org/Brochure.html

Art with environmental punch

Statistics are a very dry way to present information. Art, on the other hand, is one of the most powerful tools we have for linking a message with emotional impact. Have a look at this link sent in by Sue Wiseman. Art is cleverly used to portray statistics as a very scary message!

Successful Creative Writing Workshop

Last Sunday, Julie, Anne, Elizabeth, Sandra and Vi gathered at Sue Gebhardt's house for a Creative Writing Workshop as part of the Arts and Cultural Committee's workshop program.

We had an enjoyable time doing 10 minute writing exercises and sharing what we'd written. (See pictures ATTACHED.) The group wants to continue and will meet again in July.
